The best bedding for hamsters is soft, absorbent and safe for burrowing. Paper-based bedding is a popular choice as it is gentle on your hamster’s paws and highly absorbent. Aspen shavings are also an excellent option, as they are natural, odour-free, and free from harmful oils commonly found in other wood shavings. Avoid cedar or pine shavings that have strong scents, as these can irritate your hamster’s respiratory system.
It is recommended to spot-clean your hamster’s cage daily by replacing soiled areas with fresh bedding. Completely replace your hamster bedding once a week to maintain cleanliness and prevent odour build-up.
Hamsters love to burrow, so you should add at least 15 to 20 centimetres of bedding to allow your hamster to dig and create tunnels. A deeper layer will help your pet feel secure and encourage natural behaviour!
